Table Group Guide

Who Do You Think You Are?

2. I am the one who Jesus loves

Following Jesus is an 8-week course that explores what it means to be a follower of Jesus in our daily lives and as part of the family of God. We examine the core values of the Table Church and offer an opportunity to become a member. For more information or to register, visit table.org/FJ

Table Talk (⅓ of meeting)

  • What’s your ideal temperature outside?
  • Briefly share a high and/or low from your week.
  • In terms of taking steps of faith, what’s going well, and where do you have challenges?
  • Spend time connecting with God in prayer or song. Recommended: Bless God by Brook Lighterwood.

Discussion Guidelines

  1. Everyone shares in sentences, not paragraphs.
  2. Focus only on what this passage is saying. (This keeps everyone on the same page)
  3. Share from your perspective – we won’t argue or give advice.
  4. Give everyone time to respond. Silence is OK.
  5. The facilitator will facilitate discussion, not teach.

Discover what God is saying to you. (⅓ of meeting)

Big Idea: It takes courage to love like God

Read 1 John 4:7-21

  • What is speaking to you from this passage?
  • List some ways that godly love differs from worldly love.
  • V 18 says that love and fear can’t coexist. Where is fear holding you back from loving others?
  • V 12 says that the way we see God is through those who show us His love. Who is someone that helped you recognize Jesus’ love by the way they live?
  • Since John fully embraced Jesus’ love, he stood by when Christ was crucified while the other disciples scattered in fear. What might courageous love look like in your life?

Go do it. (⅓ of meeting)

  • Reread verses 12-13. How will you live out God’s love this week? (Make it fun by pairing up to check in mid-week on how that step is going with your partner!
  • What is a fear you need to surrender to Jesus?
  • Close in prayer over the group, asking God to cast out our fear through experiencing His perfect love.
