Signs of Life

4. Friendly Fire

Friendsgiving! Thanksgiving kicks off a season that brings some of the most missional opportunities. Whether it’s a party or serving event, spend time in prayer with your Table about how God is calling you to share the love of Jesus with those in your context. Check out our Friendsgiving guide as a resource on how to throw a good party. table.org/friendsgiving

Table Talk (⅓ of meeting)
  • What conditions do you need to get a good night’s sleep?
  • What are you thankful for? What’s stressing you out?
  • How’s it going with following and fishing? (Following = Taking steps of faith, Fishing = Sharing Jesus’ love)

Worship together through song. Recommended: Build My Life. Then, have someone pray that God would open our hearts to His Word.

Discussion Guidelines

  1. Everyone shares in sentences, not paragraphs.
  2. Focus only on what this passage is saying. (This keeps everyone on the same page)
  3. Share from your perspective – we won’t argue or give advice.
  4. Give everyone time to respond. Silence is OK.
  5. The facilitator will facilitate discussion, not teach.

Discover what God is saying to you. (⅓ of meeting)

Big idea: Toxic conflict reveals a rift between what we want and what God wants.

Read James 4:1-12

  • This Scripture describes what causes quarrels and fights between people.
    • Work through each verse together and create a list of those reasons.
    • Where do you see yourself in that list?
  • What does it mean to “humble yourself” before God? (v 7, 10)
  • In your interactions with others, what helps you resist the pull towards selfish motivations?
  • Share a time when you turned to God to help you through an interpersonal conflict. What happened?
  • Be brutally honest: when someone rubs you the wrong way, do you tend to be judgmental and critical, or do you try to look for the good in them?

Go do it. (⅓ of meeting)
  • Think of a confrontational relationship you have right now.
    • Examine the motivations beneath your behavior.
    • What steps do you think God wants you to take?
  • Break into twos or threes and pray for each other:
    • Ask God to humble your hearts in obedience to Him.
    • Ask God for courage to take the first step towards mending your relationships.
