Table Group Guide

Hot Topics

1. What is Truth

Table purpose statement (Share at the start or before the Discovery section):

This group exists for the purpose of discipleship. A disciple is someone who loves and obeys Jesus. (John 14:15) That means our focus is hearing from God and taking steps of faith. Our goal is to multiply another healthy Table. One day, some of you will lead a group like this!

Table Talk (⅓ of meeting)

  • What is something you once believed to be true that you now know is not true?
  • What are you thankful for? What’s stressing you out?
  • Where is God at work in your life?
  • Spend time praising God by taking turns praying as you are led, “thank you God for _______.”

Discussion Guidelines

  1. Everyone shares in sentences, not paragraphs.
  2. Focus only on what this passage is saying. (This keeps everyone on the same page)
  3. Share from your perspective – we won’t argue or give advice.
  4. Give everyone time to respond. Silence is OK.
  5. The facilitator will facilitate discussion, not teach.

Discover what God is saying to you. (⅓ of meeting)

Big Idea: Truth isn’t something we invent; it’s Someone we encounter.

Invite someone to pray before reading John 18:28-40

  • What is your first thought after reading this passage?
  • Jesus’ accusers didn’t go inside because they believed it would defile them, yet they were plotting an execution. What were they missing?
  • In his answers to Pilate, what does Jesus reveal about himself?
  • How does recognizing Jesus as the truth challenge the idea that everyone has their own truth?
  • Where are you most tempted to make truth fit what you want rather than what God wants?
  • Share an area where living in truth has brought God’s freedom.

Go do it. (⅓ of meeting)

  • Ask God to show you any area of your life where you need to experience freedom.
  • What is one step you can take toward that freedom? (Make an “I will” statement)
  • End with a time of prayer for one another.
