Table Group Guide

The Jesus Stuff

1. Power Encounter

Table purpose statement (Share at the start or before the Discovery section):

This group exists for the purpose of discipleship. A disciple is someone who loves and obeys Jesus. (John 14:15) That means our focus is hearing from God and taking steps of faith. Our goal is to multiply another healthy Table. One day, some of you will lead a group like this!

Table Talk (⅓ of meeting)

  • Icebreaker: What are your favorite plants to grow or eat?
  • Consider the various “tanks” for health (Relational, Physical, Mental, Spiritual). Where are you full? Where do you need to refuel?
Summer can change our normal rhythms. How can you ensure your spiritual tank stays full?
  • Let’s mix up our prayer time with a form of listening prayer. This is a great place  to practice!
    • Break into pairs with someone you know the least.
    • For 30 seconds, pause and ask God to bring a word to mind to pray over that person that will encourage them.
    • Take turns praying over each other as long as it follows the ABC’s. (It should be Affirming, Biblical, and Christ-like.) Pro tip: Something meaningful can be shared in just a few sentences!
    • Debrief as a group.

Discussion Guidelines

  1. Everyone shares in sentences, not paragraphs.
  2. Focus only on what this passage is saying. (This keeps everyone on the same page)
  3. Share from your perspective – we won’t argue or give advice.
  4. Give everyone time to respond. Silence is OK.
  5. The facilitator will facilitate discussion, not teach.

Discover what God is saying to you. (⅓ of meeting)

Big idea: The power of Jesus is undeniable and recognized.

Read Mark 1:21-28

  • What word or phrase from this passage did the Holy Spirit highlight to you?
  • What do we learn from Jesus about confronting the darkness around us?
  • How comfortable are you with the concept that evil spirits are a reality?
  • What prevents you from recognizing the truth of Jesus’ power and authority?

Go do it. (⅓ of meeting)

  • When Jesus speaks, the darkness retreats. What area of darkness do you want to ask Jesus to speak into?
  • How is Jesus inviting you to partner with him to gain victory over that area of darkness? What is your first step? (Make an “I will” statement.)
  • Bring these areas to God in worshipping with the song I Speak Jesus by Charity Gayle.
